The complex also has a library founded in 1946 by the United Nations and was after dedicated and renamed in honour of Dag Hammarskjöld for the role he played in securing the funding for the library edifice. In 1961, the Un International Library became the Dag Hammarskjöld Library and was located next to the Secretariat. The UN headquarters complex has 193 flagpoles that carry the flags of all the United nations member states and the UN flag in alphabetical order.
Functions Of The Un
The primary function of the Un is to maintain international peace and security. The system helps to settle disputes through peaceful ways. Other functions include promotion of human rights and humanitarian assistance coupled with economic development. The organization declares international observances like Earth Day and helps in their coordination.
